Hernia Surgery and Abdominal wall Reconstruction

A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through an abnormal opening in the muscle or tissue that usually holds it in place. This can result in a noticeable lump or bulge under the skin, often accompanied by discomfort or pain, particularly when lifting heavy objects, coughing, or straining during bowel movements. Hernias can develop in various parts of the body, including the abdomen, groin, belly button (umbilical hernia), or surgical scar tissue (incisional hernia). Factors such as obesity, heavy lifting, chronic coughing, and straining during bowel movements can contribute to hernia formation. Treatment typically involves surgical repair to prevent complications.

Minimal access hernia surgery, also known as laparoscopic or robotic hernia repair, offers numerous advantages over traditional open surgery. This technique involves making small incisions through which a camera and specialized instruments are inserted to repair the hernia. Compared to open surgery, minimal access approaches result in less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times. Additionally, they reduce the risk of wound complications and infection.
